How Do I Clean My Kimono?Updated 2 years ago

Gracie Barra Kimonos are high quality training products that should be taken care of regularly. When cared for properly, they will be durable and comfortable to train in for a very long time before deteriorating.

Washing Before First Use
Blue / Pink Kimono*:

  • Fill your washer with cold water.
  • Fully submerge your kimono in the water.
  • Let it soak for 20-30 minutes. After 20-30 minutes have passed, start the wash cycle.
  • Wash on cold/gentle cycle.

* While these steps are most important for colored kimonos, they are still best practice to use when washing your white kimonos as well.

Washing After First Use:

Wash Your Kimono After Each Use!

  • Turn your Gi inside out and tie your pants strings.
  • Wash in Cold Water, use color-safe / mild detergent for blue and pink gis especially.
  • Add no more than ¼ cup of vinegar to control odors and bacteria (if needed).
  • Use a gentle setting.
  • Line/Hang dry in a dry room (if indoors) out of direct sunlight and in the shade (if outdoors).
  • If you need to put it in the dryer, use air tumble setting OR low heat setting.

Note: Always wash your kimono promptly after training. Never let your kimono sit inside your gym bag or in your car. This will encourage odors and bacteria growth.

DO NOT

  • Bleach
  • Use hot water
  • Dry in sun
  • Dry on high heat in dryer
  • Let your kimono sit inside your bag or car after use

Odors

If your kimono / gi has an unpleasant odor, allow it to soak in a basin full of water with ¼ vinegar solution for several hours before washing, or add ½ cup of baking soda when you wash it.

DISCLAIMER

Your kimono is not going to last forever. The more you train, the more you use it, the quicker it will wear out. This is good! It means that you are working hard and training hard.Your blue or pink kimono will fade over time, this is normal wear and tear. The more you use it and the more you wash it, the colorfast will gradually fade. This will happen with any colored gi, and means that you are working hard and training hard!
